The Why
Did you ever feel weird or invisible because you didn’t see anybody like you when you studied American history? Can you imagine a world without the LGBTQ+ people who have contributed so much to our culture?
Research shows that today’s LGBTQ+ youth are still underachieving and thriving at lower levels than their cis gender and/or heterosexual peers. Seeing one’s identity reflected in the classroom is proven to create positive change among marginalized populations.
Why are LGBTQ+ stories not being shared in our schools? That’s a big question, we know. We are passionate about amplifying the stories of Lesbian Game Changers and helping young folks learn about a missing piece of our collective history.
Our goal is to create educational school lesson plans, books and short films that will help make high school and college campuses safer for all students.
The What
Lesbian Game Changers provides books, short-films, talks, and educational resources that help queer youth and young adults understand their own identities, especially in terms of how they were shaped by the stories of the rebels, game changers, and history makers who impacted today’s queer culture. Lesbian Game Changers works on the premise that the more we understand the stories of those who came before us, the more we understand ourselves and become empowered.
In 2017, Lesbian Game Changers founder, Robin Lowey, wrote and designed Game Changers: Lesbians You Should Know About, a book about lesbian achievements that advanced civil rights and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals. Game Changers won best LGBTQ book at the Indie Book Awards. The updated 2019 second edition book is available for purchase or download a free ebook.
The Lesbian Game Changers eMagazine is a multi-contributor site that features stories, opinions, useful info and humor about Lesbians and LGBTQ culture for all audiences.
Lesbian Game Changers, a fiscally sponsored project of Our Family Coalition, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
“I didn’t have positive role models when I was growing up. I want today’s youth to see themselves reflected in the classroom so they feel safe and able to thrive.” - Robin Lowey
The FAIR Education Act
Lesbian Game Changers was created in response to California’s Fair Education Act. The act mandates that all public schools in the state adopting new history or social science books must ensure that those resources include fair, accurate, inclusive, and respectful representations of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.
Studies have shown that when you include LGBTQ+ content in the classroom, bullying goes down and campus climate for everybody goes up. LGBTQ+ students in particular have a greater feeling of safety and a greater engagement with being at school.
